Youth Learn to Sail

Sailing is a fun, engaging activity for everyone! With our youth learn to sail classes, youth ages 6-12 can join us on the water for some summer fun all while learning a new skill that builds confidence and independence.

To see the current camp schedule and register, visit our partners at City of Olympia Parks and Rec.

Scholarships are available for all classes!

Youth Learn to Sail Classes (ages 8-12)

Youth Beginner - Youth Intermediate - Youth Advanced

Our most popular classes, Youth Dinghy courses are taught onboard our fleet of Optimist dinghies: an 8-foot boat sized for our youngest sailors!

In class, sailors will be learning how to sail the boat independently. Sailing is an empowering sport for young sailors as it puts them in control of the sailboat. After these classes students confidently can drive the boat, trim sails, and navigate on the water.

Our Youth Dinghy learn-to-sail classes aim to do the following:

  • Beginner: develop a love for sailing; learn the basics of how to sail; practice basic skills like tacking, gybing, and steering; become comfortable moving around the boat; and empower students to overcome fear/nervousness around being in control of their own vehicle.

  • Intermediate: continue to foster a personal love for sailing; solidify basic sailing skills to ensure no bad habits; develop strong intermediate level skills; and solidify the right of way rules of boating.

  • Advanced: continue to foster a personal love for sailing; practice and solidify intermediate sailing skills; introduce and develop advanced sailing skills; introduce sailboat racing as a fun way to get on the water; and help sailors develop a healthy relationship with recreational competition.

  • Our youth boat - called an Optimist or Opti - is an eight foot boat designed for youth under 115lbs to sail solo. However, with small kids, two people can often fit in the boat!

These are stable boats with a flat bottom, wide cockpit (seating area), and single sail. Optis do not capsize (tip over) easily, but it is possible, and sailors should always be prepared to go for a swim. On Day One of class Instructors teach students how to capsize and turn the boat upright, including a practical “test.” See “Swim & Capsize Test” below for more information.

At the beginner level, sailors may sail alone or with a partner depending on comfort level, but are working towards sailing the boats solo all the time!

At the intermediate and advanced level, youth are always solo.

  • Our week-long summer camps are designed to be sequential. The classes are designed to prepare sailors for the next class after taking only one, meaning sailor’s don’t need to repeat multiple beginner classes before moving onto intermediate, etc.

Sailors that took a beginner class the year before should consider retaking the beginner class this summer before moving on to Intermediate. This will help refresh basic skills and ensure they are prepared for the Intermediate class.

  • In class, sailors will have a combination of shore learning and on the water sailing. Our program utilizes techniques that engage all learning styles, including “chalk talks” with whiteboard drawings, land drills, and Instructor demos leading up to on-the-water drills. This results in a high rate of success for sailors, as well as increases confidence in their ability to sail.

On the water sailors will do water activities and games designed to help them learn to control the boat and steer it where they want to go!

Sailors always have a shore lunch break where they can eat and play games.

  • All students must complete a Swim & Capsize test on day one to continue with the class.

Optis are stable boats designed for youth, but as with any boat it is possible to tip them over. While unlikely to happen in class, it is always a possibility, so we begin class by empowering students with the knowledge and skill to “right” a capsize if it happens. All sailors, regardless of size, are able to right a capsized Opti!

Instructors always start with a lesson on shore about the boats and how to “right” them in case of a capsize. Then, students will perform a controlled capsize next to the dock under Instructor supervision. This does involve going swimming! Instructors will also have students complete a swim test while in the water. Lifejackets are always worn during the Swim & Capsize Test, while on the docks, and while in boats.

  • OCS runs an after-school and summer-long program called Opti Green Team. If your sailor has completed the Youth Advanced class, then they have all the skills necessary to join the Opti Green team and sail! Motivated sailors that have completed Youth Beginner and/or Youth Intermediate classes are also welcome to join, space permitted.

The Opti Green Team is designed for sailors that have “graduated” from summer learn-to-sail camps but still want to learn more and be a part of a fun, inclusive community. It is a model that is found at many sailing programs around the country and is designed to help ease budding sailors into the sport and life-long activity of sailing. The team focuses on building up foundational sailing knowledge and skills that will carry forward to the rest of their sailing career: The Opti Green Team aims to:

    • Build confidence in the boat and challenge comfort zones in a safe and healthy way

    • Build up basic seamanship and sailing skills to promote independence

    • Introduce racing and support sailors in forming a healthy relationship with recreational competition

STEAM Sailing Camps (ages 8-12)

Mechanical Masterminds - Ocean Explorers

Our STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Math) Sailing camps are fun week-long adventures that strive to develop a personal connection to our local waterways through hands-on exploration of Budd Inlet.

In these camps, sailors will join Instructors in a larger boat to cruise around Budd Inlet. This camp is a stand-alone class from our Youth Dinghy classes. It is a great introduction for students that are uncertain about sailing, but is also fun for students that have learned to sail in our Youth Dinghy classes. Ultimately the Instructor is in charge of sailing the boat, but will work with students side-by-side to have them participate in running the boat including driving and steering sails.

In addition to sailing, students will learn about various STEAM topics related to sailing and our local marine environment. These modules are hands-on, place-based learning activities designed to provoke thought and engage sailors in thinking about the world around them. Students will also get a chance to participate in a citizen science project through our community partners!

  • Our STEAM Adventure courses are taught onboard larger boats than our learn-to-sail classes. We have a variety of boats (a Catalina Capri 14.2, Boston Whaler Harpoon 4.6, J24, Hunter 23) that classes will be taught on based on wind conditions and boat availability. Each of these boats can take 5-7 sailors.

Boats are always skippered by an Instructor, who works side-by-side with students to get them driving and trimming sails.

These boats are very steady, and students are not required to complete a swim and capsize test in this class. However, the boats are low to the water so students are likely to get wet, and swimming for fun happens often!

  • Sailors start the week getting to know each other and learning how to rig the boats they are going to sail! Sailors always help put the boat together in the morning and put it away in the afternoon.

Each morning and afternoon, sailors will go sailing or conduct STEAM modules onshore, with an on-shore lunch break in between. When and how long sailors are on the water depends on the wind conditions, but sailors will get to go sailing every day!

Olympia has many public docks, so sailors will get a chance to explore Budd Inlet in its entirety.

  • Sailors are not require to complete a Swim & Capsize Test for this class. However, swimming for fun is an option most days of the class, and sailors are encouraged to be comfortable in the water with a lifejacket to have the most fun in class!

Sailors wear lifejackets on the docks and on the water at all times - no exceptions.

  • Sailors that loved taking the STEAM Sailing camps should consider taking another one! We run two different STEAM classes, each with a different focus and different modules.

Sailors that took this class and are interested in learning how to sail should sign up for a Youth Beginner class!

Harbor Mice Camps (ages 6-7)

Harbor Mice camps are half-day, week-long exposure sailing camps for our youngest sailors. In these camps, sailors get to hop in a boat with an Instructor who takes them out sailing. Sailors get a chance to help the Instructor with trimming sails and learn the very basics of how sailboats work.

  • Harbor Mice classes are taught on 420 sailboats, a 14-foot dinghy. These are dynamic boats that do move back and forth in a gentle way similar to how a canoe or kayak will move with your bodyweight.

2-4 students will join an Instructor in the boat for class.

  • Sailors start the week getting to know each other and the Instructor(s).

During camp, sailors will go sailing and also do some sailing-related shore games. Sailors will learn about the marine life of Budd Inlet and our local waters, as well as the very basics of sailing.

While sailing, Instructors are careful to talk to sailors about what is happening and help them develop a wonder for the world of sailing.

  • Sailors who loved class should take a Youth Beginner Dinghy class or STEAM Sailing camp once they are old enough!

  • Sailors are not required to take a Swim & Capsize Test in this class. However, swimming for fun is often done during this class, and sailors are encouraged to be comfortable in the water while wearing a lifejacket. While our Instructors are vigilant, it is always possible to fall off the boat and go swimming by accident!

Sailors wear lifejackets on the docks and on the water at all times - no exceptions.
