Junior Varsity Team
Fall Season | Spring Season
Sailing on the JV team is the next step for teens after learning how to sail!
Sailing is a dynamic, challenging, and enthralling sport that engages the mind and body. The Junior Varsity team is for those sailors that loved the challenge of learning to sail, enjoy being on the water, and want to meet new people who feel the same way!
On the JV team sailors will continue to build up their foundations and go beyond the basics of sailing, racing, boat handling, and seamanship. This program is perfect for 7th-11th graders who want to continue sailing post-summer and/or want to build up their racing experience and gain the skills needed for the Varsity team.
OCS Junior Varsity sailors are team players, value inclusivity, and love to have fun! If you have a positive attitude and want to challenge yourself, you should join the OCS JV team.
FAQs
What IS Sailboat Racing?
Youth sailboat racing is a nation-wide sport! It is co-ed with zero gender bias - men and women compete together equally. JV sailors have the opportunity to travel locally throughout the PNW to compete in some of the world's most beautiful and dynamic playing fields: our oceans, lakes, and rivers!
Practices
Junior Varsity is a two season sport: Fall and Spring. JV sailors practice two times a week each season. Fall is our building season and the best time for sailors to join, however new sailors are welcome any season!
Check out the Registration page to see this coming season's practice schedule.
Who Can Participate?
Any student in the 7th-12th grade can sail on the JV team!
Regattas
JV sailors compete at regattas every season. While not required, sailors are highly encouraged to attend regattas to build skills, grow as sailors, and bond with their teammates.
Scholarships
Olympia Community Sailing runs many programs throughout the year, including our Race Teams. Our goal is always to operate at cost, keeping fees/dues as low as we can. Any profit goes directly back into maintenance, boat replacement, scholarship funds, etc.
One way to look at costs is to consider the length (number of hours) you’ll be sailing with us and divide the cost by that number. Typically the hourly rate for a sailor to be here is less than your average baby sitter and commiserate team sports.
…Don’t let costs be a barrier!
Scholarships, sibling rates, and payment plans are all available. We have assisted many families with loaning or purchasing gear, reduced rates, scholarships for both Summer Camps AND our competitive after school and summer Race Teams.
